Standard Coating
The fans are painted with long-lasting nitro-based enamels with an average thickness of 70 µ. Surface cleaning before paint application may entail the use of either phospho-degreasing or 2.5 g metallic shot blasting, or both. The average thermal resistance of the paint is 180 °C with peaks of 200 °C.
The impellers are painted with an epoxy primer with a thermal resistance of 300 °C.
Stainless Steel
Micro shot-peening is the standard treatment for stainless steel fans. Mixed fans with parts made of carbon steel and stainless steel are painted, the standard color for completely or partially stainless steel fans is RAL 9007.
Electrogalvanizing
Most of the fans are dip galvanized in a galvanic bath. Hot dip galvanizing may be done but with limitations:
- large fans built into a single body must be divided into several parts to permit dipping in the galvanic tanks;
- the extremely narrow, high-pressure impellers fill with zinc during hot-dip galvanization and this can compromise their balance;
- lighter structures and impellers made of thin sheet metal are deformed by hot-dip galvanization;
- on impellers with a non-inserted hub, the housing fills with zinc.
NB The surface of a fan dipped in a galvanic bath may be uneven in appearance, depending upon how it is dipped. Furthermore, the structure will contain vent holes, as these are necessary to be able to perform the dipping. Protective casings made of light sheet metal deform when hot-dipped, thus it is recommended that these be purchased painted or cold-dipped.
